2014

  • Koç University celebrated its 20th Anniversary. As part of the Anniversary activities, the exhibition “Scientific Inquiries” (November 2013 – January 2014) and the conference “Prof. Michio Kaku: How Will Science Change the 21st Century?” (October 10th, 2013) were organized, and Koç University Publications published the book “Bilime Övgü” (“In Praise of Science).

  • Prof. Özgür Barış Akan received Kadir Has University's Promising Scientist Award
  • Prof. Özgür Barış Akan and Assc. Prof. Seda Keskin Avcı received the Science Heroes Association's 2013 Award.
  • The Nanomaterials Research Laboratory (KUNAL) was launched with the collaboration of OPET and Koç University. KUNAL, which is the first laboratory of its kind in the world in terms of products, and the only laboratory in Europe to possess its range of equipment, will be developing high technology products with high added value.
  • Prof. Zeynep Aycan received TÜBİTAK Science Award.
  • Prof. Dr. Özgür Barış Akan , Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahar Rumelili and Asst. Prof. Dr. Fuat Balcı received TÜBİTAK Encouragement Award.

2013

  • Prof. Özgür Barış Akan's application for his "Communication Theoretical Foundations of Nervous System Towards BIO-inspired Nanonetworks and ICT-inspired Neuro-treatment" project was accepted by the European Research Council's (ERC), and received a 2 Millon Euro grant.
  • Prof. Hakan Ürey’s application for his “New Display Technologies for Augmented Reality and Three Dimensional Applications” project was accepted, and received a 2,5 Million Euro grant.
  • Dr. Alphan Sennaroğlu, Dean of Koç University's School of Sciences, received the TÜBİTAK Science Award.
  • “Koç University TÜPRAŞ Energy Center”, collaboration between TÜPRAŞ and Koç University, and Turkey's first energy center supported by the private sector, was launched to conduct research on fossil fuels, solar energy and biofuels.
  • Assc. Prof. Seda Keskin Avcı was selected as a member of the Science Academy.
  • Prof. Ali Çarkoğlu received the WAPOR Best Publication Award.
  • Prof. Ayşegül Özsomer received the Tamer Çavuşgil Award for her article “The Interaction Between Global and Local Brands: A Close Look at Brand Globalization Perception and Local Symbolization”
  • Asst. Prof. Mendere Işkın received the Mustafa Parlar Research Encouragement Award.
  • Assc. Prof. Mine Çağlar received the Hayri Körezlioğlu Research Award.
  • The following Koç University faculty received 9 of Turkish Science Academy's (TÜBA) Young Scientist (GEBİP) awards:

  • United States Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz visited Koç University, as well as KUTEM (Koç University TÜPRAŞ Energy Center), and presented a conference where he informed the participants on the investments of United States on new energy sources.
  • In June 2013, Koç University was ranked number 31st on the “100 Under 50” list (of universities below 50 years of age) of the Times Higher Education Index.
  • In December 2013, Koç University was ranked 20th on the BRIC & Developing Countries list of the Times High Education Index.

2012

  • The TUBITAK Science Award was awarded to Professor Özlem Keskin Özkaya in the field of Engineering and Professor Ş. Ziya Öniş in the field of Social Sciences.
  • Assistant Professor Menderes Işkın was awarded the TUBITAK Incentive Award in the field of Physics.
  • Koç University, receiving three science awards by TÜBİTAK, became the most successful academic institution in Turkey.
  • Professor Aylin Küntay, member of Koç University College of Social Sciences and Humanities was awarded the Prince Claus Evolution and Equality Chair Prize, which is a very pretigious award in Holland.
  • Associate Professor Gün Şemin from Koç University Psychology Department was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau (Officier Orde van Oranje-Nassau) for his outstanding works.
  • Associate Professor Özgür E. Müstecaplıoğlu from Koç University Physics Department was ranked within the “Selected Judges” of 2012 by the American Physical Society, for the first time in Turkey.
  • *1 TUBA GEBIP: Turkish Academy of Sciences, Distinguished Young Scientist Award.
  • TUBITAK TWAS: The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey - Third World Academy of Sciences Award (TUBITAK-TWAS Science Award - is also annually awarded by TUBITAK and funded by the Third World Academy of Sciences. It is similar to the TUBITAK Sciene Award.)
  • Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Kerem Pekkan became the first scholar from Turkey to be awarded with a 2 Million Euro support fund, for 5 years, by the European Research Council.
  • KUYTAM was established by a three year 15,000,000 TL ($10 000 000) funding received from Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT).
  • Koç University is now ranked among the World's top 250 universities by the prestigious THE (Times Higher Education) rankings.

2011

  • The TUBA-GEBİP*1 Award was awarded to Assistant Professor Lemi Baruh in the field of Media and Visual Arts, Assistant Professor Menderes Işkın in the field of Phisics, Assistant Professor Sinan Ünver in the field of Mathematics and Associate Professor Emre Alper Yıldırım in the field of Industrial Engineering.
  • Professor Çiğdem Kağıtçıbaşı was awarded the TUBITAK Science Award in the field of Social Sciences.
  • Assistant Professor Kaan Güven was awarded the TÜBİTAK - TWAS*2 Incentive Award in the field of Physics.
  • Koç University Microsoft Program Engineering Research Centre was opened on October 3, 2011.
  • Health Sciences Institute Graduate and Research Programs were opened at Rumelifeneri Campus in 2011-2012 Academic Year.
  • Assistant Professor Şener Aktürk from Koç University International Relations Department was awarded the Sabancı International Research Award.
  • Professor Yaman Arkun was chosen as TÜBİTAK Science Council Associate in 2011.
  • Assistant Professor Lemi Baruh, Assistant Professor Menderes Işkın, Assistant Professor Sinan Ünver and Associate Prof. Emre Alper Yıldırım was awarded the TÜBA GEBİP Award in their own fields.
  • Assistant Professor Şener Aktürk and Associate Professor Şuhnaz Yılmaz were awarded Baki Komsuoğlu Social Science Award; Professor İhsan Solaroğlu was awarded the Neurosurgery Association Scientific Research Award.
  • Assistant Professor Seda Keskin and Assistant Professor Gülayşe İnce were awarded Dunn - L'OREAL Turkey National Fellowship for Young Women in Science.
  • Associate Professor Alper Demir was chosen as “IEEE Fellow” by the international Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

  • In 2010, the Media and Visual Arts Department is opened.
  • In 2010, the Koç University School of Medicine is founded.
  • In 2010, the Koç University Business Administration Institute becomes the first and only university in Turkey to join the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS), which is a global strategic alliance.
  • In 2010, Koç University launches the CEMS MIM international management graduate program.
  • On March 13, 2010, the first workshop of the Koç University Center for Gender Studies (KOÇ-KAM) takes place.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded to Associate Professor Alper Erdoğan and Associate Professor Metin Muradoğlu in the field of Engineering Sciences and to Assistant Professor Caner Bakır in the field of Social Sciences.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP*1 Award was awarded to Assistant Professor Demircan Canadinç in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Assistant Professor Erhan Artuç in the field of Economics, Assistant Professor Serdar Kozat in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Assistant Professor Tarcan Kumkale in the field of Psychology.
  • Professor Umran İnanwas awarded the TUBITAK SPECIAL Award in the field of Engineering Sciences.

2009

  • In March 2009, Koç University becomes the first in Turkey to obtain EQUIAS accreditation.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP Award was awarded to Associate Professor Bahar Rumelili in the field of International Relations, Associate Professor Barış Coşkunüzer in the Field of Mathematics, Associate Professor Erdem Alaca in the field of Mechanical Engineering and Associate Professor Metin Muradoğlu also in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded to Professor Fikri Karaesmen in the field of Engineering Sciences, Professor Hakan Ürey also in the field of Engineering Sciences and Associate Professor Tolga Etgü in the field of Basic Sciences.
  • Professor Özlem Keskin was awarded the TÜBİTAK - TWAS*2 Incentive Award in the field of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

2008

  • In July 2008, the 24-hour program begins at Koç. Within this program, high school students become university students for a day.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP Award was awarded to Associate Professor Alper Erdoğan in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Associate Professor Emre Alkan in the field of Mathematics, Associate Professor Selva Demiralp Cuda in the field of Economics, Assistant Professor Serdar Taşıran in the field of Computer Engineering and Associate Professor Şuhnaz Yılmaz in the field of International Relations.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded to Associate Professor Alper Kiraz in the field of Physics and Associate Professor Selva Demiralp Cuda in the field of Economics.

2007

  • Till 2007, a total of 2,287 scientific seminars and conferences have been given at Koç University.
  • In 2007, the department of English Language and Comparative Literature is opened.
  • In 2007, the Philosophy Department is founded under the Koç University College of Humanities and Literature.
  • On November 12, 2007, Koç University signs the Global Compact.
  • In 2007, the Archeology and the History of Art Department is founded under the College of Humanities and Literature.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP Award was awarded to Professor Hakan Ürey in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Professor Fikri Karaesmen in the field of Industrial Engineering.
  • The TUBITAK Science Award was awarded to Professor Ali Mustafazade in the field of Mathematical Physics and Professor İrşadi Aksun in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded toAssociate Professor Alper Demir in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Assistant Professor Özgür Müstecaplıoğlu in the field of Physics.

2006

  • In June 2006, Koç University graduates its first PhD students.
  • The faculty members of Koç University have received a total of 48 awards from TÜBİTAK and TÜBA till 2006.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP Award was awarded to Professor İbrahim Halil Kavaklı in the field of Genetics and Cell Biology, Professor Z. Özlem Keskin in the field of Chemical Engineering, Associate Professor Alper Kiraz in the field of Physics and Associate Professor Selda Küçükçifçi in the field of Mathematics.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded to Professor Zeynep Akşin in the field of Management and Associate Professor Metin Türkay in the field of Engineering.

  • In October 2005, the Koç University Anatolian Civilizations Research Center (ANAMED) commences its services.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP*1 Award was awarded to Professor Barış Tan in the field of Management and Associate Professor Tolga Etgü in the field of Mathematics.
  • The TUBITAK Incentive Award was awarded to Associate Professor İsmail Lazoğlu and Professor Serpil Sayın in the field of Engineering.

2004

  • In 2004, the Koç University Law School opens. For the first time in Turkey, a department begins instruction half in Turkish and half in English.
  • In 2004, SANERC (SEMAHAT ARSEL NURSING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH CENTER), which was founded on December 21, 1994 in cooperation with the American Hospital and is the first and only of its kind, becomes affiliated with the Koç University School of Nursing.
  • On November 4, 2004, the Globalization and Democratic Governance Center (GLODEM) is founded.
  • In 2004, Koç University becomes one of the successful Turkish universities to earn the right to join the EU “Network of Excellence”.
  • In the summer of 2004, a new program called KU Summer Research Experience for High School Students is launched.
  • In 2004, the Koç University International Relations graduate program is opened
  • In 2004, the Anatolian Civilizations and Cultural Heritage Management graduate program is opened at Koç University for the first time in Turkey.
  • Professor Murat Tekalp was awarded the TUBITAK Science Award in the field of Engineering Sciences.
  • Assistant Professor Özgür Müstecaplıoğlu (Scholar) was awarded the TUBA-GEBİP Award in the field of Physics.

2003

  • In 2003, Turkey’s first interactive alumni website, KU Alumni Association, goes online for the purpose of enhancing alumni communications.
  • The TUBITAK Science Award was awarded to Professor İskender Yılgör in the field of Chemistry and to Professor Yaman Arkun in the field of Engineering Sciences.
  • The TUBA-GEBİP Award was awarded to Professor Zeynep Aycan (Scholar) in the field of Psychology, Associate Professor Alper Demir (Scholar) in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Associate Professor Burak Özbağcı (Scholar) in the field of Mathematics.
  • Professor Kamil Yılmaz was awarded the TUBITAK Incentive Award in the field of Economy.

  • TUBA-GEBIP*1 Award was awarded to Professor Ali Mostafazadeh in the field of Mathematics-Physics, Professor Alphan Sennaroğlu in the field of Laser Optics-Physics, Professor Aylin Küntay in the field of Psychology and Professor A. Levent Demirel in the field of Chemistry.

  • In 1995, Koç University bestows a diploma on the first graduate students of the Business Administration department.
  • On August 15, 1995, the Koç University Alumni Association is founded.
